Cedar Fence Types

After you decide on your fence material, now its time to decide on the style. Cedar fence comes in a few different styles that are “off the shelf”, but we can also custom build any fence you like. Below we discuss the most popular options for those choosing cedar fence materials for their next fence installation.
Western Red Cedar

Cedar Picket Fence

Cedar picket fences are comprised of a few different components. First is the picket style. The picket style refers to the cut at the top. Traditional style is dogear. Dog ear pickets have a cut on each side with a flat top. Less common are pointed pickets like the one pictured above. The pointed picket fence gives it a more elegant appearance. For all of our fences we typically use western red cedar, which is the most common variety of cedar available today.
There is also the gothic picket style. Gothic refers to the inverted cuts on the sides and bottle top design as pictured below. Gothic style can come in slightly different variations, so if you desire an exact style please be sure to share some photos with us prior to your fence build. Picket fences are usually in 4′ and 5′ varieties. 6′ picket fences are uncommon, but we can custom build anything you’d like. We have also built 3′ picket fences to meet the demands of some our clients in certain residential suburbs.

Cedar Privacy Fencing

Cedar privacy fencing is the most common fence installation of them all. It offers a natural look and full privacy for your backyard. The privacy refers to the board placement, with being each board nailed right next to one another. For all fences, whether picket or privacy, there will be rails, or 2x4s placed on the top and the bottom on the interior side of the fence. This is the frame of the fence and provides stability for each panel between the posts.
With any cedar fence installation you have the following components:

Board on Board Fence

Board-on-board fence can also often referred to as shadowbox fencing, depending on its construct. This type of fence features alternating vertical boards to provide gaps between for air to flow. Similar to full privacy, but has a different appearance than that of a privacy fence. Many HOA organizations have adopted this style of fencing as their fence of choice for their residents due to its more manicured appearance. Shadowbox Fencing

Shadow box fencing typically allows for air to flow through it, as the boards or pickets are separated between a 2×4 rail. It has a distinct appearance. Board on board fencing can be difficult to discern from privacy fencing from afar. Up close, you can tell the boards or pickets overlap each other, increasing privacy and decreasing air flow.

Horizontal Board Fencing

Horizontal fencing is a very popular style of fence installation. It offers full privacy and appears more decorative than your average privacy fence. Typically for a horizontal fence installation the boards are thicker than regular fence pickets. Hence, expect to pay more money for a horizontal fence. With heavier material, comes the need for more reinforcement at the post, hence we recommend horizontal board fences to have aluminum fence post support to accommodate the additional weight.

Horizontal Fencing

has grown in popularity in recent years. Horizontal fences have pickets or boards that are horizontal rather than vertical like a traditional fence. Horizontal fencing necessitates a different installation method as well as different materials. The boards that go between the posts are not ordinary pickets; they are usually pre-fabricated with a tongue and groove design that allows them to overlap and fit together like a puzzle. As a result, material costs rise and options become more limited.

Horizontal Fences with Aluminum Posts

Horizontal fencing is not only a great option; when combined with metal posts, you get the best of both worlds. Metal posts with a cedar fence provide a fantastic contract with the wood grain while also providing increased strength and rigidity. Metal posts embedded in concrete are a sure bet for a sturdy fence that will last for decades. We usually use aluminum or steel posts when we use metal posts. Aluminum is the least expensive option and does not rust. Steel is more expensive, but it is stronger.
